Goals

•    To promote remote sensing research that addresses the needs of Kentucky residents, particularly in distressed regions.  Recent examples include:

  • Quantification of nitrogen concentration in trees and crops using hand-held spectroradiometric techniques
  • Identification and analysis of recent ice storm damage in eastern Kentucky forests using Landsat data
  • Examination of relationships between land use, cover and condition and water quality at multiple spatial scales

•    To develop new remote sensing techniques when necessary.  Recent examples include:

  • Development of computer vision techniques for automatically locating and measuring trees in aerial photography and LiDAR data
  • Development of freely available custom software for determining percentages tree cover and impervious surfaces in small cities using air photos
