Research
Goals
• To promote remote sensing research that addresses the needs of Kentucky residents, particularly in distressed regions. Recent examples include:- Quantification of nitrogen concentration in trees and crops using hand-held spectroradiometric techniques
- Identification and analysis of recent ice storm damage in eastern Kentucky forests using Landsat data
- Examination of relationships between land use, cover and condition and water quality at multiple spatial scales
• To develop new remote sensing techniques when necessary. Recent examples include:
- Development of computer vision techniques for automatically locating and measuring trees in aerial photography and LiDAR data
- Development of freely available custom software for determining percentages tree cover and impervious surfaces in small cities using air photos
